Sophie explained that she has dylexia and it's a real problem; she did not read before 4th grade. she's only read 2 books for pleasure in her life. I assured her that there are ways of working with this. That listening to books on tape/cd is a great idea. We looked through her binders and her benjamin email account. She forwarded all emails from her English teacher to me.

We should be able to finish chapter 6 by the end of the week. Sophie will be taking a chapter 6 test early next week. She was also present for parts of chapter 7 at her previous school. Once I see how much she remembers, I will be able to determine how much time we will need to spend on chapter 7.
Sophie and I spent the class discussing where she left off in biology, what would be expected of her for class, how she would be evaluated, and what she could expect from me. We then discussed chemistry and how it is related to biology.

Sophie is nice to work with and has a very positive attitude. She doesn't have much of a background with computers and her previous computer class was a bit of a joke. We spent some time on some basics about how computers talk to each other and what the main descriptors are for modern personal computers. She grasped the concepts well. We began a plan to advance her practical knowledge of using a computer for academic research, personal communications, data protection, and personal/identity protection. The actual plan of study for the next 12 weeks will depend on whether she can test out of the benjamin computer class (which means we will use that material plus our own) or if she will have to retake it in the fall.
