Lesson Topic
Kite Runner
Lesson Outline
In order to keep track of the characters better, we went to the internet and spent 5 minutes finding and printing out pictures of people who looked like we imagine the characters to be. We cut them out and pasted them to a large paper and wrote the character names underneath. Then we read chapter 3 out loud together.
Next I got out my version of How to Read Literature Like a Professor and read chapter one out loud to Sophie. We made another color chart documenting the main points of chapter one (the 5 basic elements of quest literature). We put that on the wall. then I asked Sophie about her favorite movies. She identified all of the 5 requisite parts for a quest novel and determined that most of the movies she sees are quest movies too. We looked at Mr. Hamilton's questions on quest literature. Sophie did a great job. I brought cheerios and milk just in case but she had eaten breakfast and was ready to work. She did a great job and was bright and articulate.

The Red Converitble
Lesson Outline
Discuss story. Ask abuot setting and characters. Ask about plot. Ask what happens in the end. Not everybody got the end. I assured students that that's what makes the story a great story. discuss vietnam war. Discuss Chippewa Indians. Locate them on a map. Ask about the drive Henry and Lyman took. Trace it on a map (huge drive--they go all the way up to Alaska.)
Discuss various aspects at length. Ashley was "on fire" She did a fantastic, wonderful job at the discussion. She carried it for the other three. I got the impression that she was the only one who truly focussed on the reading and used an analytical mind to consider it.

The Kite Runner
Lesson Outline
Sophie hates the Kite Runner and fell asleep reading it.
I told her ways to stay awake while reading (standing, sitting on a stationary bike, going out in the sunlight, doing jumping jacks at the end of every paragaph...)
I explained that when characters have foreign names it can "exclude" the reader from the experience. We made a quick little chart of who the characters are.
I read the first two chapters to her out loud.
I explained that the first 25 pages of a book are the hardest. Sometimes it takes longer that that to get sucked in.
