Pharmacology
Session Date
Lesson Topic
triglycerides, cholesterol, statins
Lesson Outline
review basic chemistry of organic acids, saturated and unsaturated, and fatty acids
diagram glycerol and how it combines with fatty acids to form triglycerides.
relate triglycerides, specific proteins and cholesterol to lipoproteins.
discuss the difference in lipoproteins and how each functions in the transport of cholesterol
discuss how cholesterol is required by the body, its functions
using a diagram, outline the synthesis of cholesterol by the liver, the 19 steps, concentrating on the rate limiting step involving Hmg-Coa reductase inhibitors(statins)
Assignment

Lesson Comments
Some basic chemistry review needed before beginning. This helped in the understanding of terms like saturated and unsaturated, as well as lipoproteins. trevor was active in the class discussion and wanted the review before the newer material.
Session Date
Lesson Topic
cholesterol
Lesson Outline
cholesterol structure and synthesis
importance of cholesterol to the body
HDL, LDL, and triglycerides
Deposition of excess to form atherosclerosis and CVA and MI
PHarmacology of the COA reductase inhibitor drugs

Lesson Topic
brain chemicals and receptors, cardiovascular drugs
Lesson Outline
discuss ACE inhibitors for the treatment of HBP
Continue the discussion of brain neurotransmittors and receptors. Their actions and adverse affects/ Concentrate on serotonin, dopamine and drugs which affect their levels
Assignment

Lesson Comments
Trevor is moving the conversation along with his many questions. We are splitting the information into segments, cardiovascular then neurolyiptics to keep the inteerest up.
Session Date
Lesson Topic
neurotransmittor receptors
Lesson Outline
using diagrams and print outs read and discuss the action of neurotransmittors, the type of recpeptors and the reactions to stimulation of the receptors. Concentrate on the ion transfer whilch occurs and how that causes the action potential to develope.
Assignment
look up sigma receptors

Lesson Comments
We first looked at the structure of neurons and the role of neurotransmitters in the conduction of the impulse. Then we discussed some specific receptors and transmitters, by reading articles dealing with the response in the brain to these transmitters, particularly GABA. Trevor had his usual 100 questions, which are all well thought out and stimulating to try to answer. He seems to do beteter with the longer class, it gives him, and me, a chance to research deeper into some of this material.
Session Date
Lesson Topic
cardiac drugs
Lesson Outline
discuss the action of antiarrythmic drugs and ace inhibitors
Assignment
research brain chemicals

Lesson Comments
Objectives listed above were shelved and replaced with a great discussion and class on the affects of ions and neurotransmitters in the brain. Trevor is very knowledgeable and wants to absorb all that he can on this subject. We will continue some of this in the next few classes as
it is an area in which Trevor has an interest.
Session Date
Lesson Topic
digitalis-pharmacognosy and pharmacology
Lesson Outline
Looked at the formula for digitalis and read about the digitalis plant from which it is extracted.
Discussed specific parts of the myocardial muscle cells which are involved in ion transfer and cell membrane depolarization and contraction.
from this, determine the mode of action of digoxin as it affects the sodium-calcium enzyme pump and increases calcium ions in the cells which slow the rate and increase inotropin affect
Assignment
read over paper on digitalis purpurea

Lesson Comments
unfortunately, Trevor was 45min late so we were unable to view some videos to clarify some of the effects. However, we did complete the complex mode of action and discussed how the trend again is moving toward plant derivatives for the discovery of new and powerful drugs.
Session Date
Lesson Topic
congestive heart failure
Lesson Outline
discuss CHF-definitions of, symptoms, causes- MI, arrythmias, ischemia, valvular disfunction.
effects on other organs due to CHF which will lead to discussion of pharmacology of drugs used to treat CHF

Lesson Comments
Trevor, as usual, had a goodly number of questions. The class proceeded along by a series of questions and answers leading to conclusions and follow ups. We will discuss the classic mode of action of the digitalis glycosides to treat CHF and the use of ACE inhibitors
