8.4 Zero and Negative Exponents – We learned that any variable or number with a zero exponent is equal to one. Then we learned that a negative exponent is made positive by moving it to the numerator or denominator of a fraction. Next we practiced simplifying expressions with negative exponents. Then we reviewed multiplying with powers, finding a power of a power, finding the power of a product, and the order of operations.
13-2 Solving Quadratic Equations by Graphing – We practiced finding the roots or zeros of a quadratic equation by graphing. We learned that the x-intercepts are the zeros of the function. Then we learned that we can name the two roots by naming the two numbers that the root falls between. Next we saw an example where there were no roots because the parabola did not cross the x-axis. We completed two of the homework problems.
8-4 Modeling with Quadratic Functions – We used quadratic functions to find the area of a rectangular pool and deck. Then we learned to use the vertical motion model to write an equation for the height of an object after an initial velocity. We used the formula –b/2a to find the number of seconds for the object to reach its maximum height. Then we substituted the number of seconds into the original equation to find the maximum height.
