This page dealt with analogies. He did not miss any questions on this page. Last, he read the story “The Woodcutter’s Tal” out of the Aliens and UFOs book. He completed all the questions on Main Idea, Recalling Facts, Making Inferences and Using Vocabulary with little difficulty. Mom let me know that our last session before summer break will be June 4th. I look forward to working with Josh again next week!

Josh and I started by grading the Comprehension Check that he completed before Spring Break. He missed 4 questions out of 15 (73%). We went over the questions missed before moving on to the “Aliens and UFO’s” book. He selected the story “Kim’s Story”. He read the selection out load to me and then answered all the comprehension questions independently. He did an outstanding job. He only missed one vocabulary question in all 4 sections! He ended the session by completing Lesson 4 (Sounds of S) in his Word Study workbook. I look forward to working with him again next week!

Today we started off by reviewing the story Josh read last week “The Russian Giants” and answering the Main Idea questions. Josh had difficulty identifying which statement was the Main idea, but he was able to pick out the statement that was to broad. We then worked on Lesson 2 of the Mastering Spelling Workbook, pages 5 and 6. He did an excellent job on these pages. We still need to continue working on his handwriting, especially when writing on a small line. The remainder of the session was spent on a Comprehension Check. He had to read two 9th grade passages and answer 12 questions. Before he began reading the selections independently, we reviewed the strategy of “previewing the text”. We will continue with this assignment when we meet again after Spring Break.

Today we started our session with a Word Study Lesson on the sounds of gh. Josh did an excellent job on workbook page 10. Then I had him redo a previous 9th grade Comprehension Check that he had scored a 53% on. Unfortunately, Josh scored a 53% on his second attempt. When I inquired as to why he felt that he had not been able to improve his score, he said that he was having an “off” day because he had not had time to eat a snack before coming to our session and he was hungry. I felt that there may have been some resistance to redoing this assessment and he might not have re- read all of the passages. I explained to Josh that while he may not always like the assignment that I ask him to do, he must try his best on them because there’s always an academic purpose for the assignments. We ended the session with Josh’s favorite activity. He read the story “The Russian Giants” out of the Aliens and UFO’s book.

Today Josh and I continued to work on writing skills. He will have to write a five paragraph essay next Tuesday, so we created an outline. I reminded Josh of the components of a five paragraph essay: an Introduction ending in a thesis statement, three body paragraphs, and a Conclusion restating the thesis. He worked hard to focus his details. After this we had 15 minutes to read a story out of the Aliens & UFOs book. Josh selected the story “An Encounter in New Guinea”. I will be meeting with Josh on Mondays from now on.
