Today we read "The Mysteries Men in Black" selection out of the Aliens & UFOs book. Josh read the entire selection to me with little difficulty. He then answered the comprehension questions on finding the Main Idea and Recalling Facts. He only missed one question. Way to go! After the reading we continued working in the Word Study book p. 7 and the Mastering Spelling book p. 4-5. Overall Josh completed all the work with little difficulty. I expect to move through the beginning lessons of each book rather quickly, in order to get to the more challenging lessons further in each book. I have given Josh a copy of the unit 1 spelling list so that he can study the words at home. I look forward to working with Josh again next week!
Today was spent on math homework. Josh felt that he needed to get his math homework done, so that he wouldn't have to do it over the weekend. We solved 5 math problems on Solving Systems Using Elimination. As always, Josh worked very diligently. I look forward to working with him again next Thursday.
Today we worked on Unit 3 of the Word Study book. This unit focusses on word parts (base words, root words, prefixes, suffixes). Josh did a great job identifying the number of word parts in the given words. We then worked on the Lesson 13 in the spelling book. I gave him a pretest and he scored a 3 out of 15. I believe that these work books are at an appropriate level and will be sufficiently challenging for Josh. The last thing that we worked on was a continuation of last week’s writing lesson. He began typing the introduction of his dream story. As always Josh was a pleasure to work with, and I look forward to working with him again next week.
Great Session!
We started today's session by continuing reading the "Whaley House" story out of the Apparitions book. Josh then completed the Retelling Facts section in the book. He only missed one question. Next, we worked in the Mastering Spelling workbook. He completed two sections (1. Past Tens Verbs 2. Forming Plural Nouns). Then, we worked in the Word Study Book on (The Sound of ch and kn). Josh did an outstanding job on all worksheets. Finally, we worked on writing skills. I reviewed creating a web and we selected writing prompt to begin writing on. Josh created a story web on a dream that he would like to write about. We will use this web to continue working on writing skills next week.
Today we worked on several skills including key boarding, per mother's request. Josh began Unit 1 in the Modern Curriculum Press Word Study book. He did pages 3-5 with little difficulty. He also began Lesson 1 in the Mastering Spelling book. He only missed 2 words out of 15 on the pre test, which I had him type on the computer. He then selected 5 words to write sentences on. This he also typed on the computer. He had some difficulty with capitalization. He seemed to capitalize random words in the middle of the sentence. I reviewed the rules for capitalization and had him make the corrections. We ended the session by reading Whaley House in the Apparitions book.
Joshua really enjoyed reading “The Ghost Ship of Matthew Lee” from the Apparitions Book. We worked on Main Idea, Recalling Facts, Making Inferences and Vocabulary. He did an excellent job answering all the questions. We also began working in a new reading book today. He read “Charles” from the Junior Great Books Series 5 (Book 2). It was an entertaining story and Joshua really related to it. We will continue working on the corresponding workbook pages for this selection next week.
