Anatomy & Physiology
Session Date
Lesson Topic
endocrine system
Lesson Outline
Examine an overview of the glands and hormones present in the endocrine system. Use a video to present the functions of the endocrine system compared to the nervous system, in terms of response and time. Discuss that hormones are varied in their action and that the action is dependent on the receptors in the cells or target organs affected. Examine the complexity of the system in general, with specific action to be presented for each major gland

Lesson Topic
endocrine glands
Lesson Outline
Discuss hormones and the "lock and key" theory of receptor stimulation. Explain the action of a receptor and use an example to show that a hormone is only secreted in quantity when it is needed. Discuss the need is determined by the quantity of substance in the blood which the hormone effects.

Endocrine system
Lesson Outline
Using the information on the board from Monday, complete the list of functions which are affected or controlled by the endocrine system. Define the endocrine system as ductless glands and the secretions as hormones. Discuss the secretion of hormones directly into the blood stream and the target organs which they then affect.

Lesson Topic
endocrine system
Lesson Outline
Introduce the endocrine system by discussing the symptoms presented by a series of "patients" to their doctor. From these symptoms, begin to outline the control which the endocrine system exhibits.

lab Thursday
Lesson Outline
Lab this week examined a variety of samples looking for microscopic and macroscopic organisms. The samples exhibited a large variety of living creatures, from outside water sources and inside sources.

Lesson Topic
pain and analgesia
Lesson Outline
Discuss how pain receptors are involved in the transmission and sensations of pain. Show how narcotic analgesics block the pain receptors and relieve pain. Discuss the difference between addiction and dependence.

Lesson Topic
analgesia
Lesson Outline
Discuss the history and use of the opium poppy in analgesia.
View pictures of the plant, the flowers and the bulb which contains the opium. Read and discuss a short paper on the use of the "milk" obtained from the poppy and what other chemical compounds are extracted from the juice. Discuss the use of opiod narcotics to treat pain, analgesia, sedation, and euphoria examined.

Lesson Topic
Pain
Lesson Outline
Discuss how the sensation of pain can be acute or chronic. Explain what is meant by pain threshold, and exactly where in the central nervous system pain is "felt". Discuss the difference between the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness which can develop from chronic pain, along with accompanying depression.

Lesson Topic
lab thursday's
Lesson Outline
This hands-on lab examines the anatomy of life forms present in a drop of standing water. The water chosen was from the bucket and plant along the front walk of the school. Microscopic examination was performed on water taken from various depths, and also on water which was filtered from the bucket.
Some interesting life forms found with unusual anatomical features.

Lesson Topic
What is pain
Lesson Outline
Discuss the necessity for the sensation of pain. Use examples to differentiate and define acute pain and chronic pain. Define malignant and benign. Discuss the causes and effects of chronic non malignant pain and chronic malignant pain. Discuss how chronic pain syndrome can result in depression, which will lead to a whole other physiological study
