Examine and discuss a patients symptoms as presented to her doctor. From the symptoms, determine what possible endocrine disorder the patient has, and what further testing could be done to verify the diagnosis. Discuss the disease of Diabetes, its history, the endocrine gland involved, and the life expectancy prioer to the 1930's. ant. pituitary and thyroid
Lesson Outline
Discuss why the secretions of the anterior pituitary are referred to as trophic hormones. List the major glands affected by these hormones. Concentrate on the thyroid gland and its hormone. Discuss how iodine is a required element for the production of the thyroid hormone, and in areas where iodine is limited in food, hypothyroidism is prevalent among children , leading to Cretinism.

Lesson Outline
Continue with the action of the posterior pituitary hormones on the human organism. Discuss the action of oxytocin in stimulating the uterus contractions, and the need for these contractions. Expand the physiology of oxytocin to the action of milk letdown by the mammary glands. Discuss the importance of this action, and the stimulus for it.
Examine the anterior pituitary gland diagram, and note the varied actions controlled by this gland. Discuss growth and the effects of growth hormone on the bones and muscles. Examine photographs of hypopituitary growth hormone effects on children, as well as hypersecretion. Discuss pituitary dwarfism and gigantism.
