Declan needed to go over the following topics for his test tomorrow: solving rational equations and inequalities. He knows the steps to take to solve these types of problems, however, he needs to practice working them out on his own since there are many steps involved.
We went over the following topics: solving rational equations, solving rational inequalities, and finding the x and y intercepts of high order polynomial functions. We also reviewed the Zero Product Property, and finding the possible rational zeros of a polynomial equation.
Rational Functions, Long Division of Polynomials and Synthetic Division
Lesson Outline
He forgot his book and notes today so he wasn't sure of the information he went over in class. So, we practiced how to graph rational functions (vertical, horizontal and slant asymptotes, intercepts etc), long division of polynomials and synthetic division and when to use each case. We also started graphing quadratic inequalities,.
Assess his current knowledge of the test format & what techniques he has been exposed to for solving various types of problems.
Complete appropiate practice problems.

Lesson Comments
Declan was very familiar with the test format and had excellent knowledge of the strategies required to solve the problems.
We did practice problems. He would complete 5-6 at a time, then we reviewed them.
Declan has reached all the goals he set at the very beginning of the process. He still has room to improve on the reading section, but he really has come a long way. The key for him is to use the process of elimination technique. He hasn't been doing that and I think it will help him narrow down his answers. He's worked his tail off and I think he's in good shape for the test.
I thought Declan did a very good job on the english section of his practice test. He only missed 4-5 questions based on the mistake of the rules (i.e. ones he really should not have missed) The rest were very difficult, and in some cases, trick questions. I emphasized the importance of using the process of elimination to eliminate obviously wrong answers. For some reason, he has stopped going through the questions that way, and instead has been focusing on finding the "right' answer, which definitely caused him to make some mistakes.
Went through several sections of questions with thorough explanations.

Declan did extremely well on the practice questions, getting all correct except one. However, his timing is off. Takes much longer than he has on the real test. He understands that he'll have to use shortcuts on test day. Taking practice test right now with timer. I think he's well-prepared overall for the science portion.
