Find suitable car - Georgia found a Volkswagon Cabria for $3487.00 - she had to find the sales tax, add that to cost, then arrange loan from bank at a rate of 7% for five year loan. Next, she had to find total costs for car per month including car payment, insurance on car, and the allotted amount for gasoline. This goes in to her budget.

Georgia is doing so well. She is even going to make 2 budgets - one for the assigned reality project and one for next year when she goes to college. This was her idea and she is very "into" this. Great session!
Finish giving criteria for the reality project - discuss format for showing results of this assignment and explain how to show the information on a pie chart. Remember that ALL steps must be addressed/explained and problem-solving must be shown on separate sheet. Today work with job, wages, taxes, etc. to find monthly income, then begin with settling on an apartment and finding the costs involved.

Begin project called "Reality Lab" Explain that this involves practical math and decision-making in the real world. 1) Get a job (with only a high school education - no special training) and pay is based on 40 hours per week - calculate take home pay after taxes (use 0.85 for withholding tax) This is the amount of money left to spend each month
2) Find an apartment (1, 2, or 3 bedroom)amount of rent plus costs for electricity, house phone, cable tv, and internet

Georgia typically claims that she can't "do" fractions anytime she is asked to a problem containing fractions. I want her to feel more comfortable when solving problems that contain fractions.
Georgia is very cooperative and if she doesn't understand something, she will ask questions so that she can do the exercises. I really like that in attitude in a student. She will fax me the chapter review exercises tomorrow.
