Today Gwendolyn and I warmed up with a mile walk. When we got to the park, Gwendolyn and I worked on passing using both her left and right hand. We then went on to do some defensive and offensive drills that involved catching and dodging. Next, we worked on cradling and checking. We went over the importance of doing a safe check.
Today Gwendolyn picked a pattern and colors for a friendship bracelet. We started by cutting several strands of embroidery thread that measured 24 inches long. We made sure that there were two sets of each color. Gwendolyn combined the threads and tied a knot, leaving about 2 inches of slack. She arranged the strands in the order she liked. She started on the left side with the outermost color and made a forward knot by creating a 4-shape over the 2nd color. Then she looped it under and back through the opening and pulled it tight. She did this twice to each color. We will continue this in the next few classes. It takes a lot of patience and time.
Today Gwendolyn and I discussed proverbs and adages. I gave her a list of proverbs and adages and we discussed them. She then came up with an example of each. This required some deeper thinking and interpretation on her part. It ended up being an excellent exercise for her. In addition, she added to her opinion piece. She added even more facts and research to back up her ideas.
12-6 Area of Triangles
We learned that the formula for finding the area of a triangle is derived from the formula for the area of a parallelogram. Then we learned that height is a measurement of the perpendicular distance from the vertex of the triangle to the base of the triangle.
Gwendolyn ran most of the perimeter of the outside of the park two times today. Her goal is two full times around the park which she will accomplish by June.
Today Gwendolyn passed and trapped the soccer ball, kicked 5 goals and practiced pitching and hitting the wiffleball. She ended the session with stretching and cooling down using a yoga ball.
Gwendolyn finished her three dimensional globe today and hung it from the ceiling in the front of the school. She added a flag that says "Earth Day". She did a great job with this! We continued reading from two texts about World War II. We discussed reparations, appeasement, isolationism, and imperialism. We read about the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the rise of dictatorships, specifically those of the Axis Powers.
Spelling review, prefixes: pre,de,il, and ir, opinion writing
Lesson Outline
Today Gwendolyn began our session with a quick spelling review. When she was finished, she continued working on her vocabulary unit 10. For this particular activity, she studied the difference in meaning between the prefixes pre, de,il and ir. She practiced adding these prefixes to base words and we talked about the change in meaning. She also added a new paragraph to her opinion piece. She chose new facts to support one of her arguments.
We learned about the sensory organs, muscles, heart, and skin. Then we learned the functions of the brain, lungs, and bones. Next we explored the functions of the organs in the digestive system. Finally we learned the location and function of the bladder and kidneys.
