12-5 Area of Parallelograms
We learned that the area of a parallelogram can be found by multiplying its base by its height. Then we practiced finding the area of several parallelograms.
Spelling review, vocabulary unit 10, persuasive writing, and journal writing
Lesson Outline
Today Gwendolyn and I had two sessions together. During our first session, she reviewed her spelling and completed another section in her vocabulary unit 10. When she was finished, she continued working on her persuasive writing piece. She decided where she wanted to add in the additional facts she wanted to use to support her point of view. During our second session, Gwendolyn did some creative writing in her journal, completed a reading passage with corresponding questions, and read from her chapter book.
We learned the difference between organs, organ systems, and organisms. We learned that the brain is the organ that processes information from the spinal cord and senses. Then we learned how the nerves process messages from the brain to move.

Lesson Outline
Today Gwendolyn began our session with a brief spelling review. Then she worked on unit 10 in her vocabulary workbook. She had to match meanings and locate synonyms and antonyms for her vocabulary words. When she was finished, she continued working on her persuasive writing piece, adding supporting details and facts from research. Her finial 10 minutes were spent silent reading.
Gwendolyn made a batch of Chocolate Chip Cookies and Cream Cookies. She started with making a cake mix base. Gwendolyn sifted together flour, sugar and salt. Next, she combined butter, egg, vanilla and cream cheese. For the finishing touch Gwendolyn added the white and chocolate chips and 2 cups of chocolate cream cookies. We baked the cookies for 10 minutes.
12-3 Perimeter
We learned that the distance around a polygon is its perimeter. The perimeter of a polygon can be computed by adding the lengths of all the sides.
12-4 Area of Squares and Rectangles
We learned that the amount of space inside a shape is its area. Area can be found using square units or formulas that exist for some polygons. The area of a square or rectangle is the length multiplied by the width.
Gwendolyn did a great job painting her three dimensional globe today. She is very artistic, so her globe looks very realistic. She will be able to coat with Mod Podge and hang tomorrow.
Vocabulary unit 10, transition words in opinion writing, spelling practice,and library trip

Today Gwendolyn began our session working on her vocabulary unit 10. We discussed the words and she highlighted the meanings. She continued working on her opinion piece, adding details and better transitions between sentences. When she was finished, she reviewed her spelling words and defined two of the words she was unclear about. During our second session, we took a trip to the library and played Wordical.
12-1 Using Customary Units of Length
We learned that length can be measured in customary and metric units. Then we saw that smaller units of measure result in greater accuracy when measuring length. Next we learned to choose the most appropriate unit of length.
12-2 Using Metric Units of Length
We learned that the metric system is a decimal system where every unit gets bigger or smaller by multiples of ten. Then we learned when to use each unit of length in the metric system. Next we learned how to convert between customary and metric units of length.
