Words Their Way spelling inventory, reading comprehension passage, and oral reading
Lesson Outline
Today Gwendolyn began our session with a Words Their Way spelling inventory. Gwendolyn is an excellent speller and has made great progress this year. When she was finished, she completed a reading comprehension passage with corresponding inference questions. This is a higher level comprehension skill. She did an excellent job. We also finished up the book "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". During our second session, we went to the library to check out books.
Gwendolyn and I discussed events happening in the U.S. during the roaring 20s and during The Great Depression. We learned about the dust bowl, migration, and poverty among farmers. We discussed FDR's Presidency and The New Deal. We read about this time period in two textbooks. We discussed the link between World War I and II. We watched "World War II Causes" on BrainPop and discussed new concepts - appeasement, reparations, isolationism. We learned why the U.S. was not involved in the War until after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Finally, we reviewed roman numerals and State capitals. We planned an Earth Day project and an egg project for class next week.
11-4 Relating Division to Multiplication of Fractions
We learned that one way to find the quotient of mixed numbers is to change the calculation to an equivalent one involving multiplication of improper fractions. Then we learned that the inverse relationship for division with fractions is to multiply by the reciprocal of the divisor. Next we learned that when a greater fraction is divided by a smaller fraction, the quotient is greater than one. When a smaller fraction is divided by a greater fraction, the quotient is less than one.
Gwendolyn started off with her two laps around the park and is now running more of the laps than walking!
She practiced her trapping, kicking, dribbling and knee bouncing today. She then practiced volleyball skills and we played a short game up to five points where she learned how to keep score and serve the ball.
