review compound and complex sentences
compound-complex sentences
I'm very pleased with Cal's effort so far. He's done a solid job with compound and complex sentences. He's works through the worksheets with little problem, but when it comes to writing, he still has some trouble. We started working on compond-complex sentences, which he learned pretty easily.
We edited Clay's paragraphs about JBP. He did a solid job writing and editing, but is still having trouble identifying a lot of the mistakes in his sentence structure. As soon as you point on out to him, he can correct it. But we need to work to get him to the point where he does it on his own. We then talked about how to write and introduction, which really plagues him. We'll continue to work on it.
Will is learning about roller coasters...read over notes taken and discuss what else he would like to know. Continue gathering information about roller coasters. Will enjoys looking up facts on the internet, finding images, and watching videos about his topic. He is doing a good job.
Cal did a great job on the worksheets, and has a solid grasp on compound and complex sentences in theory. But when it came to write them, he had a lot of difficulty. I had him write 10 of each, and while he did a pretty good job with complex sentences, compound sentences we troublesome. Cal's biggest obstacle right now is that he doesn't like writing, doesn't want to do it, and therefore writes to get to the end, rather than write well. The purpose of using different types of sentences is to be more descriptive and fully develop ideas. Afterward, I had Cal write a paragraph about going to the amusement park, but he had to use 2 of each of the types of sentences. Again, he had trouble, but in both instances, his writing led to a good discussion about sentences and how to use them.
Clay had some troubles with appositives, so we spent extra time reviewing that material today. He's still a little confused, but definitely improved. I then wanted him to start working on his essay for the week, but he had a lot of trouble getting started. The concept of an introduction is very difficult for him, and when I corrected him a couple of times, he got a bit stressed out. Rather than pushing it, I had him focus on the body paragraphs instead, which he'll finish for homework for Friday.
Cal remembered the material we went over last week, and did a solid jobs on the worksheets we did today to review. Repetition is the best way for the material to sink in, and he now has a much better understanding of basic sentence structure. Afterward, I had him start writing a paragraph in which he uses all the different types of sentences we've covered, but class ended before he finished.
Clay has come a long way with his writing, and now we're going to start to focus on being more descriptive and concise. He picked up the concept of appositives pretty quickly, and did a great job on the worksheets. We'll work on incorporating them into his writing this week.
We're still focusing on basic sentence structure, specifically compound and complex sentences. I had Cal start working on a series of worksheets to help him better understand each. He had some problems at first, but improved by the end of the class.
Clay did a solid job on his essay for the week. His paragraphs are improving, but he's still making too many simple mistakes in sentence structure. If he takes the time to really edit his work, he catches it. We'll keep working on it.
