We reviewed squares and square roots. We examined the geometric mean and compared it to the arithmetic mean. Then we explored similar triangles and other polygons and worked a number of problems, determining whether or not two triangles are similar and if so, finding their similarity ratio. We then took the missed test and reworked part of a test with a less-than-stellar score.

Devin worked hard and we accomplished a lot. His attitude continued to be excellent, even though he was in school for make-up work.
We discussed ratios and proportions and properties of proportions. Then we progressed to solving proportions. Devin displayed some confusion about 'perfect squares' and square roots. So we reviewed the relation ship between squares and square roots and computational conventions for the use of the radical sign.

Devin's attitude was fine. We worked non-stop through the two hours. There were a few areas in which he had some difficulty retaining the steps in the process, but after a number of repetitions, he seemed to be fine.

nice class. they liked having some control over the curriculum.
We learned about the key features of Jazz music: syncopation and the pentatonic scale. Each student got drum sticks, then a drum and we beat "normal" rhythms, then syncopated rythms. We read late Langston Hughes poems and "felt" the syncopation. We analyzed the poems for content, musical quality and then of course form, meter and rhyme scheme.
Worked on several of the two handed hi hat exercises from Realistic Rock. Worked on moving the right and left hands around to different parts of the drum kit to get different sounds from the same groove. The purpose of this exercise is to be able to make seamless transitions from one drum set voice to another while maintaining a steady beat.
Assignment
Practice the exercises from Realistic Rock; work on creatively altering the beat by moving the hands to different parts of the drum kit.

Lesson Comments
The two handed hi hat patterns were very challenging for Devin. This is a new coordination that he is developing, so I hope he will take the opportunity over the summer to work on the assigned exercises.
