Paralyzer by Finger 11 - playing through the intro; accenting upbeats on the hi-hat., coordination exercises and hi hat opens/closes.
Lesson Outline
We started the session by playing exercises from the Realistic Rock book and then got into playing the intro to Paralyzer. We spent a good deal of time working on the dynamics of the main groove for verse 1 which uses upbeat accents on the hi hat while maintaining a pretty aggressive volume on the bass and snare drums. Devin had to play this part repeatedly and very slowly as it adds a new level and dynamic to his 3 way coordination - it is a very difficult technique to master. We then spent some time allowing Devin to play some free form exploratory beats and fills to challenge his musicality and creativity on the drum set.
Assignment
Continue practicing Paralyzer - the intro and main groove for verse 1. Practice the hi-hat accent exercises. Spend some time improvising and being creative with beats and fills.

Lesson Comments
Devin played everything that was written in chart form very well. The hi hat accents in the first verse of Paralyzer are very difficult to play properly and are therefore quite challenging for him. A next step for Devin is to get him to be able to play creatively without having to have music in front of him. He would "freeze up" when I asked to just play whatever came to his mind. At this point, with the skill level he has achieved thus far, I am interested in helping him find his own sound and style on the drums rather than simply playing drum karaoke or having to have a chart in front of him to constantly direct him. Reading music and being able to replicate a drum part are extremely important skills and are expected of music professionals, but it is equally important to be creative and be able to respond appropriately in jam sessions and improvisational settings.
