Lesson Topic
Thesis, Argument, Concession and Rebuttal
Lesson Outline
The students read a well written blog post by a man who is against recycling. We dissected the article, finding thesis statement (not easy to find -- Devin was the only one who found it) and arguments. We then identified the concession statment and the rebuttal. We made up a pretend argument between a girl and her parents (who don't want her to go out with a horrible guy) to illustrate the concepts.
Assignment
Read 8 Myths about recycling and identify the arguments. think about rebuttals

Lesson Comments
This was a hard lesson but they were all on board. Sadie wanted to learn and take notes. Ashley was zoning out but I kept dragging her back in and making her produce correct answers and praising her for them. Devin was slower and not as confident, be he had as good a grip as Sadie. Nice lesson. Wroked out really well.

Continued with 7 stroke roll exercises and talked about how to apply this rudiment to fills and solos on the drum set.
Assignment
Pracice 8th rhythms; practice the 1st 4 exercises on the hand written sheet; practice 7 stroke roll exercises and review all rudiments.

Lesson Comments
Devin played very well today. He is very interested in eventually learning how to play double bass drum beats. I have started him on some hand/foot coordination exercises that I wrote for myself that will help give him control over his limbs regardless of if they are playing against each other on the same side or opposite sides of his body.

Devin's playing has gotten to a point that we are ready to start working on playing to recorded music. We have picked the song Paralyzer by Finger 11 and will take 15-20 minutes each session to listen to and analyze the drum part in the song and write a drum chart for it. This will train Devin's ear to listen analytically and interpret rhythms into a written standard notation.

Lesson Comments
Students are understanding what they are reading. We tried to work on pronounciation today a little more. They need to pay attention to fine tuning their verbal skills, but I am happy with their reading comprehension. They refer back to the glossary provided from time to time, but for the most part can understand what is going on in the readings.
