Jackson and I reviewed the progress of the story so far and how Charlie's intelligence is improving drastically in each journal entry. Jackson then worked on looking up definitions of vocabulary words associated with the story. The remainder of class was spent reading the story aloud.
Jackson is doing research on a topic that he would like to create a science project for. I want it to be a topic that we can do calculations for, create a Powerpoint presentation, as well as relate it to what he is doing in Algebra.
He started by multiplying polynomials (distribution of a monomial, FOIL, special product), then he factored polynomials (same), and then started using these concepts to solve equations (using the Zero Product Property).
Today we reviewed the days of the week by answering ¿Qué dia es hoy? and he was assigned homework for this coming 3/1 on the days of the week. We learned the different times of the day: morning, afternoon and night including the foods that go along with those meals . We finished some exercises by reviewing the family vocabulary already learned. We went over vowel sounds and sang a song which helped us with that. Lastly, we learned about Argentina, studied the flag and learned its capital city.
Jackson used the Internet to research information about winter weather. He navigated various websites, clicked on links for the answers, and/or wrote his own search queries for the requested information.
"Flowers for Algernon" Short Story & Editing Exercises
Lesson Outline
Jackson spent the first half of class editing three paragraphs. He corrected errors in punctuation, spelling, and grammar. He is progressively getting better at reading and recognizing the mistakes in these short paragraphs. The remainder of class was spent reading and discussing "Flowers for Algernon."
In the absence of any specific math topic, I decided to use online games to enhance Jackson's ability to solve mechanical problems. We used Basketball Cannon and Wonderputt. Jackson was fully engaged in solving problems.

Jackson enjoys learning through online games and solving challenging puzzles.
Jackson continued reading "Flowers for Algernon" and exploring questions about intelligence. He has noticed that as Charlie becomes smarter, he also is unhappier because he understands that people he thought were his friends were really just making fun of him.
Jackson first reviewed the story's progress thus far, and we talked about why some people treat those with disabilities differently or unkindly. We continued reading the story, making note of how Charlie has begun to get smarter because his journal entries have fewer misspellings.
