Maya learned about Judy Heumann and Hurricane Katrina. She learned the following new vocabulary: disabled, natural disaster, volunteers. Maya researched both topics on the ipad, and we discussed how individuals in communities can help each other. She utilized the internet to research these topics, and we incorporated geography into the lesson.
Equal or Unequal: Maya used symbols <, >, or = to determine lessor, greater or equal values of numbers. With assistance she correctly answered problems presented to her. She was cooperative and followed instructions. Good job Maya.
Today Maya started our session ready to read independently. She read Level I, Winter Vacation. She read very quickly and made numerous errors that impacted the meaning of the text. She did not self-corect and was not open to feedback. After she completed the book we discussed the story. She had a hard time recalling the beginning and middle of the story. We then read Sloppy Joe alternating pages. What a great book! Then Maya had the idea of drawing Sloppy Joe's messy room and then his clean room to then list verbs that resulted in each space (cleaned-messed, threw-placed). She was enthusiastic until it was time to generate verbs. Maya said she was sick and wanted to go home. I continued working, so she decided to add a few verbs to her drawing. Lastly, she completed letter e in her cursive book.

Lesson Comments
Maya had a very hard time following directions today. She really wanted to be in charge and was very defiant when I tried to get her on track even after following her lead. Her mother did warn me that she was in a "complaining mood" today. I was proud of her for reading her book independently.
