the lesson, today, was all about the senses. I had Devon list the senses, and describe how each is used in everyday life. We did an experiment. I blindfolded Devon, and put various items in her hand, for her to identify and describe. Some items were easily identified, and others were designed to give other senses a challenge; a slice of strawberry, a keychain with a specific shape, and so on. Devon enjoyed this 'game' and insisted I take a turn with the blindfold. Both of us attempted to identify the object, and the senses used to make these determinations. We then had a conversation about different parts of the brain, that control how we use these perceptions. I explained how the frontal lobe helps with reasoning and planning, as well as emotions and problem solving. Also the parietal Lobe is associated with movement, orientation and recognition, the occipital lobe is associated with understanding the things we see and the temporal lobe is associated with understanding the things we hear..We talked about how when one sense is missing, the others compensate for this loss. I showed Devon a short video of Helen Keller, to show an extreme example of this process. And we watch another video of an engineer, who designs race cars for NASCAR. This was a good class.

Reading - read/discuss orally a science fiction story called "The Fog Horn" by Ray Bradbury. This was and interesting story using symbolism. Devon surprises me with the depth of her understanding…good session!
Devon watched videos of an actual African safari…it showed the means of travel used - small plane then Land Rover with open top for passengers to look from (take pictures), and the "tents" where they would sleep. The small villages, sky, landscape, and colorful traditional clothing worn were beautiful as well as the animals in the wild. We marveled at the colorful, exotic birds, lizards, zebras, leopards, baboons, gazelles, etc. I was surprised at how much Devon already knew about all this. Good session.
Prime and composite numbers: Devon was introduced to a prime and composite numbers. She did well with the operation concept will come later. Good job Devon.
