We got a late start because the lunch came late, and we actually did not get to reading the play today. Michael got his assigned reading from Mitchell and we spent some time discussing that and how we're going to approach it. Michael has difficulty remembering what he reads, and we talked about different strategies he can employ to retain more information. One is taking meticulous notes while he's reading. Along those lines, the topic of Dragon Speak came up, which I highly recommended.

Michael is getting better at operations with fractions. It is still tough for him to do all of the concepts in the same assignment, but he is doing better. Tomorrow I plan to move on to dividing fractions. Thinking mathematically in any way will help him prepare for college.

Michael is still having trouble with the reading, but he's definitely starting to understand the play and characters better. As the trial begins, there are a lot of interesting religious questions that come up and he's been very engaged in our conversations. I'm very curious to see the difference in his understanding after he watches the movie.

Michael was doing well multiplying mixed numbers today. I decided to put the last few concepts that he has learned into one assignment. It is tough for him to put the concepts together, but it is something that he will need to be able to do as he continues to college.

Lesson Comments
Michael had no problem multiplying fractions but struggled to multiply mixed numbers because of the number of steps. I broke it down (one step at a time) which seemed to help. I also showed him a process for using his calculator to help him to the long division required for changing the improper fractions back to mixed numbers.
Michael and I have determined what we need to work on in order to maximize our time together. Spelling skills are very limited, hopefully this program will be helpful. He is very coperative and focused.

Lesson Comments
Michael and I had a very interesting discussion about the Presidential Debate and the connections that can be drawn to the Brady/Drummond relationship. To his credit, Michael watched the whole debate, despite not understanding all of the issues. I stressed the importance of paying attention to how the candidates presented themselves as much as the substance of what they said. I then tied it all back into the Brady/Drummond dynamic of the play. We then began Act 2, which has the signature line of the play. We discussed various interpretations of the proverb and why it would be used as the title of the play. Michael's reading is improving somewhat as he gets used to the style and content, but he's still struggling.
