Lesson Outline
She is starting a new chapter on Normal Distribution, so we worked on finding the area under the curve on a Standard Normal Distribution curve, along with a Normal Distribution curve, and how area under this curve relates to probability and percentage. We used the tables today since she did not have her calculator, tomorrow we will go through finding the area/probability/percentage with the graphing calculator.

Probability - quick review
Lesson Outline
Since Jared is going to complete the second half of a problem sheet on various Probability topics, we reviewed (always in view of getting back on track with the regular curriculum) the basic techniques for calculating probabilities depending on the different scenarios presented. Specifically, we discussed situations where it is often more convenient to calculate the probability of an event _not_ occurring in lieu of the event occurring, and then using the relation P(A)=1-P(A').

An excellent lesson again. What a great week, I'm sad it was so short due to Jared's hunting weekend, but I know the trip will do him a world of good.

Birthday statistics project
Lesson Outline
Despite the fact that Jared was still in a very positively charged mood after his IQ test, he very quickly settled down to tackle his project on birthday statistics. He's still sorting through the datasets he has collected, and today he (freehand) compiled a frequency table of the birthdays of the astronauts of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions, and the birthdays of people at the school. In conjunction with this, we discussed the significance of homogenous datasets versus more scattered samples, and the various biases (mathematically speaking, not culturally speaking) that can creep into datasets and how crucial it is to keep track of external influences that may skew the data.

What can I say... Jared is definitely interested in the subject of data, and statistics, and related fields. I hope to pique his interest further once I get back from my trip, and we can look at longer-term projects.

We completed a packet for his homework on sampling methods and dot plots. He said that he had no other work, and did not remember the chapter that they are in to continue, so we ended early.

Re-acquainting with The Birthday Paradox project
Lesson Outline
Since we've worked on other topics in the meantime, Jared's Birthday Paradox project in probability has lain dormant. We revived it this afternoon, considering that two students who were not present a few weeks back when Jared initially collected birthday information were at the school today. He now has as complete a data set as possible, and we shall conclude this project soon.

Lesson Comments
A complete contrast in behavior as compared to the Algebra class. I have a feeling Jared is avoiding something with respect to Algebra ( = he needs it for his SAT, whereas the Statistics material is not so prominent, and he loves the subject). Looking forward to completing his project!

Discrete Probability
Lesson Outline
We started to look at a review for her exam this Friday. It seems the topics are probability distributions (mean, standard deviation, variance, and expected value), and discrete probability distributions.
