Lesson Topic
Geo Time-Scale; Geologic Evolution
Lesson Outline
*Geologic Time-Scale: Identify, print, and place appropriate graphics for the following events:
Earth’s formation, first cells, first eukaryotic cells, first multicellular life, early fish, land plants, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, flowering plants, dinosaur extinction, and early humans.* Geologic Evolution: Discuss catastrophic vs. uniform interpretations of nature. Identify both catastrophic and subtle processes & the effects on lifeforms.* Introduction to Fossil Formation Keynote Project; create fossil formation terminology list on Quizlet.com.

Classification of Fossils
Lesson Outline
Preassessment: Types of fossils worksheet

“Types of Fossils” Keynote
-Discuss formation and characteristics of petrified remains, molds, casts, carbon films, original remains (amber), original remains (“mummified remains”), and trace fossils.
-Inspect & classify fossil samples of each kind
-“Fossil Myths” Keynote. Explore how scientific understanding and exposure has changed humanity’s interpretation of fossils.
Assignment
1. Reading Assignment (Prothero) & Questions (details have been emailed to Rowan) 2. Find, print (or draw) and place 11 graphics on geologic time-scale. 3. Study Categorizing Life terms on quizlet.

Good session. Rowan liked the fossils.
Rowan still has not printed out the pictures for the time-scale. He said it was because his printer at home wasn't working. He should have plenty of time this week at school to get those printed, colored and placed.

Lesson Topic
Categorizing Life
Lesson Outline
On large piece of paper construct two informal (non-cladistic/non-phylogenic) “trees of life:”
a. “all life” (prokaryotes & eukaryotes down to protists (...-likes), fungus, animals, plants).
- use internet to find and compare images of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. - watch footage of amoeba and paramecium on youtube.

b. animals- also note some defining characteristics of major groups.

* Create "Categorizing Life" list of terms using quizlet.com

Pretty good session. Rowan was printing some of the time-scale graphics when I arrived, which had been his assignment from Monday and he should have already had done.

Introduction to Geologic Time-Scale
Lesson Outline

- informal pre-assessment: student places labels for 11 major events where he thinks they should belong on a 1 meter time-scale.
- Geologic time-scale table: student fills in table, calculating how far along a 1 meter & 3 meter time-scale each event should go.
- Create 3 meter time-scale on wall, place 11 labels in appropriate locations.

Assignment
Use the internet to locate an appropriate images for each event to place on time-scale.
