We read the short story, "Button, Button". We started with some background information about the setting and characters to help Kellan understand the story. We discussed the development of the plot of the story as we read.
In our recent class, we engaged with the short story "The Eraser" written by Jason Reynolds. Our primary focus during this session was to assess our comprehension of the text by answering a series of questions related to the story.
Today Kellan read a story called, "The Run". We used prereading strategies to determine what the story might be about. We also drew on prior knowledge to relate to the possible theme of the story.
We read Ray Bradbury's "The Veldt" to learn how an author uses character interactions and technology to reveal a theme about the impact of scientific advancements on society.
Ben pretended to login, but it wasn't showing up on my computer. He kept hitting keys like he was taking the test. When I asked to see his laptop, he said it just logged him out. Once I got him logged back in, he was flagged for rapid guessing. He seemed frustrated. I eventually suspended the test to complete at a later time.
I substituted for Liam's reading class. Liam read a passage titled "The Scavenger Hunt". This was a story of children working together to collect musical items that started with letters A-Z. We reviewed the vocabulary words "locate," "settle," "uncover," and "retrieved" in the text. We worked on word structure by counting syllables. We practiced identifying themes, the problem, and the climax. We wrote reflections on the content and on feelings that characters might have experienced.
Ben listened to/ read the Readworks text entitled, "Alien Planets." He researched some information on the latest Kepler-22 and then accurately completed 8 questions, which included both vocabulary and comprehension review, followed by a brief discussion on exoplanets.
