Ben reviewed letter sounds today. We went through all letters using flashcards and he gave me the sound of each letter as well as a corresponding word to go with the sound. For enrichment we read articles about Australian animals in a magazine and practiced using decoding skills for words with which he was unfamiliar.

We began the session reviewing vowel sounds using word building blocks. Ben enjoyed this hands on activity because he said they looked a lot like legos. He added consonants to the front and the end of each vowel to make a three letter word. He practiced reading the words with the same beginning and ending sounds but different vowels to reinforce the sounds and to feel the different shape his mouth makes when he says each vowel. He also practiced isolating beginning sounds. He looked at three pictures on different pages and was asked to find a picture with a certain beginning sound. He was very good at isolating the beginning sound.

Daniel used word building blocks to practice vowel sounds individually. We added consonants before and after the vowels and practiced sounding and reading c-v-c words. Next, we reviewed each letter sound with a corresponding sound picture. We worked with the m sound and isolating the sound at the beginning of a word. We did an activity where he looked at three pictures on a page and had to pick the picture that began with the m sound.
