We discussed what Ben likes to read about. He said he enjoyed to read about topics related to science. He chose to read more about sharks. Ben liked discussing the book and expanded on the topic.
Today was our last session of the year! We decided that it would be a good idea to try and finish the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" book that we have been reading. Between us we managed to finish it today!!. We took no breaks and read the whole session. We did spend the last few minutes talking about summer reading and about what a great year he had this past year. He feels ready to move into 4th grade!
Assignment
Please read at least 1-2 books over the summer (or more)
Today Ethan and I continued to read his book "Diary of a Wimpy Kid." Ethan likes this book and he asked me if we could finish it before school ends. I only have one more time with Ethan, after today so we had a reading marathon. We read within 50 pages of the end of this book and perhaps will be able to finish this Thursday which will be our last meeting of the year. I have asked him to finish reading this book in the summer if we do not complete it and we can discuss it in August!
Ethan wanted to read more of his book "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" to try and finish before school is finished. We are doing parallel reading. Sometimes he can't find his book but today he had it with him so we could continue with our parallel reading. It's important for him to try and read a little bit during the week to improve his reading skills.

Lesson Comments
I had to leave early today because of a parent teacher conference but Betsy continued reading with him.
Today Ethan and I read a short story called, "The Million Dollar Nickel." It is about a rare nickel that was found that was worth a million dollars. There were questions to answer regarding the story. This theme caught his imagination and he asked about who was the richest person a hundred years ago. That brought up the subject of Howard Hughes so we did some research on him. We finished the session by reading more of the current Diary of a Wimpy Kid book that we are reading.
Today Ethan and I continued with parallel reading. We started with an article about Jackie Robinson. Then together we read the book "Diary of a Wimpy Kid-Third Wheel". We also spent some time discussing summer reading. Ethan admits that he does not like to read. We discussed the importance of reading over the summer. He says he will try hard to read at least one book over the summer. I will confer with his Language Arts teacher and send a short list of suggested books to his mother. He said he knows he's going into 4th grade and will need to "step it up a notch" for the next school year.
Today Ben reviewed the 4 signs he had learned last week. He did very well and signed them many times and also in a sentence. We continued reading The Dragon Slayers' Academy book and added 4 additional signs. The signs are: sword, pig, wizard, and boy. He signed each 5 times.
Today Ethan and I did parallel reading. He is enjoying the current book which is Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Third Wheel. We spoke about books he may be interested in reading this summer. It may be a good idea for him to read along with an audible book. He thinks this a good idea. It could help him with fluency.

I had a parent conference with Ben Buro's mother during my session with Ethan so it was cut short.
Substituted for Donna, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Birdman Article
Lesson Outline
Per Donna, we read out loud from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and The Birdman article and answered the questions of the latter. We watched a short video of Felix Baumgartner's 128,000 foot jump.
Today, Arianna worked on Razkids and read the Birthday Book. First, we listened to the book, then, she read the book to me. We also read a bilingual book called Adios Oscar about a butterfly who actually is a moth. Last, we switched gears and watched a math video about skip counting. Then, we finished by writing out our numbers by twos! She got all the way to 50 by skip counting!
