Today Ayden did a practice drill where he improved his time in his 9 X tables. Ayden and I went over his homework together in order to reinforce drawing a bar diagram to write and solve equations using division. Then he began to review all of the content from Topic 4, in preparation for Wednesday's test. Ayden continued his FF program today. We discussed his level, and we both agreed that Level 3 is a little too challenging for him. He did some demo lessons in level 2 and it was still challenging. Next week he will begin again at level 2. He should progress through this level more easily and with less support. If we find this is not challenging enough, we will try Level 3 again.
Lunch was very late today so we only had a few minutes of class time. Ayden practiced his warm-up exercies...first typing letters and words with just his left hand, then typing words and letters with his right hand, and finally typing sentences using both hands. Ayden did very well today...he had me cover his eyes and call out the letters for him to type. I believe he was surprised by how well he did!

Aydan had a great time playing the songs. He played the rhythm part and I played the lead melody part. He got lots of satisfaction out of knowing that we were able to play some real songs together. His chord formations and tone were great.
Ayden worked in lesson 2-5. It is a tough lesson because it involves all word problems. I am sure through practice Ayden will understand. We will practice this lesson again, tomorrow. The objective of this lesson is to show that a picture or diagram can represent information in a problem and be used to understand and solve the problem. Some problems can be solved by writing and completing a number sentence or an equation. Ayden continued with his FF program. Ayden also practiced his 9X tables and did a practice drill.

Ayden thinks during the learning process and he asks very often a very good questions.
Today, Ayden's mother, Judie, and I held a highly productive conference in which Ayden and ideas for his Florida project were discussed.

Connie could not have been kinder in telling me that I need not enter the time for this conference but that I was not prohibited from doing so. She said that she had e-mailed Jeff about the extra time, for accounting and payroll purposes. I make this entry out of an abundance of caution.
Today we worked on Florida map skills. Ayden was given a blank map of Florida and told to mark a number of different locations in the state (Everglades, Lake Okeechobee, Miami, Tallahassee). He did well. He then indicated that he wanted to do a BrainPop video, so we went to the computer lab for that purpose. Following that, we returned to his room and discussed the content of the BrainPop video, focusing on the differences between cities, counties, and states. Before class ended, Ayden was told that I would be giving him some information soon about requirements for his Florida project. He seemed receptive to the suggestion.

Thus far I have been unimpressed by BrainPop as a didactic tool for my particular students. Ayden insisted on doing BrainPop today, so I acquiesced. He chose BrainPop Jr. (for K-3), rather than BrainPop. After watching the video, he chose the "Easy," rather than the "Hard," quiz. Of five questions, he got one right.
Give handout - picture of keyboard/no letters - have Ayden name and pretend to strike the keys as I call them out (hopefully this will encourage him not to look at the keys as he types). Then complete practice exercises stage 5 (w, o). Introduce Level 2 Stage 6 (q and p). Complete exercises. Ayden is doing very well. I think he knows the keys but is uncertain...practice brings confidence!
We began today by reviewing aspects of Florida geography, spending a good deal of time on bodies of water (Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, Lake Okeechobee, Suwanee River), Everglades National Park (with considerable discussion about the history and evolution of the Everglades), and the states that border Florida on the north (Georgia, Alabama). I gave Ayden an oral quiz, without saying so, and he did well. His attitude was excellent, and his interest in the material appeared high, throughout the session.

Ayden indicated that he knew his parents were going to meet me "last" tomorrow, although he seemed to think our class would follow immediately thereafter. I explained to him that we would meet from 12:30 pm to 1:15 pm (per Connie). This was news to him, apparently.
