Vasco Balboa -
Ana was tasked with researching facts about her chosen explorer: Vasco Balboa. She found a copy of his portrait to include in her report. We used a web site about exploration and found some basic personal information (name, date of birth, death etc.). She then used Wikipedia to find some information about his life in Panama, and his expedition across the country from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Finally she found an tourism site and found the influence Balboa had on Panama, and how he is celebrated. She collected her data and prepared it to upload to her school webpage.

Christopher Columbus -
Ana was tasked with researching facts about her chosen explorer: Christopher Columbus. She found a copy of his portrait to include in her report. We found a website about exploration and found some basic personal information (name, date of birth, death etc.). She then used Wikipedia to find some information about his relationship with the crown, and his contribution to exploration. Finally she found an editorial site that contrasted what is thought and what is known about Christopher Columbus. She collected her data and prepared it to upload to her school webpage. She is unsure about how to post her assignment, so she requested instructions from her teacher.
Homework: post report to website.

Health:
Sinuses and Allergies -
Ana read two articles about sinuses and allergies. She then wrote an essay of 200 words about what she learned from these articles. She wrote about where sinuses are located and how mucus is important for moving dust and other things out of our airways. She learned that sinusitis could cause headaches and bad breath. She wrote about how allergies are the opposite of AIDS (an over abundance of immunity) and how different allergies are named for the part of the body they affect: Hay fever, Hives, asthma etc
Ana rewrote the epic poem, Beowulf, up to the point where Grendle dies, as a modern story. She used her creativity to write a funny story set in current times.

The Emperors of the Ice -
Ana finished her book report about the book 'The Emperors of the Ice', by Richard Farr. She summarized the winter expedition to find emperor penguins, and the hardships associated with walking 75 miles during the winter in Antarctica. She then reported on the travel by Scott and his team to the South Pole, only days after his competitor planted the Norwegian flag at the pole. We worked together on reporting about the letters written by three main characters, while they waited to die inside a tent, with no food or fuel, during a blizzard. Ana finished the report with her opinion and recommendation for this book.

The Emperors of the Ice -
Ana and I finished reading chapters of the book ‘The Emperors of the Ice’, by Richard Farr. The book ended with the brave but tragic deaths of many of the main characters, who succeeded in getting to the South Pole, but did so only days after another explorer. These courageous men died because of a lack of food/ fuel and being stranded in a severe blizzard on their return to camp. The final chapter was complete with passages from the actual letters these brave men wrote; to the people they love, as they sat in their tent waiting to die. This emotional ending was intense, but also inspirational. Ana and I will work on finishing her report at our next class.
Assignment
Think about how she would like to finish her report.

The Emperors of the Ice -
Ana and I read two chapters of the book ‘The Emperors of the Ice’, by Richard Farr and discussed how hard it must have been to be on the expedition in Antarctica. We talked about how one character was injured from burning blubber, and how such an incident could not only hurt immensely but also could have been fatal under the circumstances. We took notes to include in our book report once she has finished reading.

The Emperors of the Ice -
Ana and I summarized the first half of the book ‘The Emperors of the Ice’, by Richard Farr. We used our notes from Monday and our summary to start a book report. Ana chose her favorite parts of the book and described the narrator and the expedition. We left the report with a reference to the emperor penguins, and will continue once we have finished reading that part of the book. We then read most of two chapters before ending the class.

Ana and I read the next four chapters of the book ‘The Emperors of the Ice’, by Richard Farr. We will continue and finish the book to start on the report on Friday.
