Elements of Non-Fiction, Reading and Journaling
Lesson Outline
Patrick was excited to read from his dolphin book today. We each read 2 pages. I helped Patrick with word attack skills through out his reading. He is very interested in dolphins! Next I brought out another non-fiction book about dolphins and whales to explicitly introduce non-fiction and the features of non-fiction text. He was excited to look through the book. We explored the title page and table of contents. Patrick chose to read more about the killer whale and Atlantic Dolphin. We discussed headings and took turns reading. Then Patrick worked on writing small pre-primer sight word sentences. Patrick had trouble remembering some of his sight words. Lastly, Patrick chose a prompt to write about in his journal. He wrote one sentence about his favorite time of day.

Lesson Comments
Patrick was motivated to attempt working in language arts, but struggled tremendously in reading and writing. Specifically, in reading he had a lot of trouble decoding words and recalling sight words. It is concerning to me how much regression/inconsistency has occurred over the past few weeks. However, he seemed more successful writing in his journal. I will focus on decoding in our upcoming sessions.

Even and Odd Intro
Lesson Outline
Today I introduced even and odd numbers. Patrick did not display background knowledge of the concept, so we began with manipulatives. I modeled how even numbers always have partners and odd numbers always leave one out with small cubes. Then I put random amount of cubes on the table and Patrick determined if hey were even or odd by pairing them up. After that we played a dice game (that he did not seem to enjoy!) and then played even and odd tic-tac-toe, which he loved!

FF/LB
Lesson Outline
Today Patrick continued in his FF program. In Bedtime Beasties, one of his brain games, he had to read the sentences independently. In the past they had dictated them to him. He did a very good job, however, his scores will probably decrease since it requires more time. In LB, Patrick continued to work on his writing. We researched some different similes to make his writing more entertaining. Patrick decided to create his own simile. He did a great job.

Lesson Comments
Patrick almost seems to display a photographic memory at times. He is very excited to move onto landforms. I gave him the choice to move onto landforms or maps. He asked to do social studies more often, but I am not sure we can with his issues in language arts.

Main Idea, Reading and Writing
Lesson Outline
Today Patrick read Level D The Team based on his main idea project from yesterday. He was motivated and successful. He displayed an improvement in fluency and word attack. He continues to focus on initial visual clues rather than looking and decoding the entire word. I read the questions of the comprehension test and Patrick answered with 100% accuracy. He always demonstrates excellent comprehension. Then we read a few more pages of the dolphin story. Moving into writing Patrick and I revised his writing from the previous day focusing on identifying extra letters in words. Then he added another sentence to his entry. Last I read from Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Great day today:)
