Today I introduced Patrick to the Lindamood-Bell program he will be using this year, Visualizing and Verbalizing. I set the climate, informing him of the what and why to the program. I created diagrams so he can see that our left and right hemispheres of our brain work together. I explained to him that in order for people to understand/remember oral and written language, "picturing and talking about images" can be extremely helpful. It helps us to express ourselves orally or in writing. Immediately following this dialogue with Patrick I had him look at a given picture and describe that picture orally. He did a good job doing so and after I described the image he gave me, we compared our pictures and added or changed some of his descriptions so that we would have a better match. He did a great job and we had a lot of fun during today's lesson! I am looking forward to seeing him make great progress with this program.
Patrick continued his participation in a first day of school activity. He listened to a read aloud, "The Kissing Hand" in a group setting. This activity enabled all of our students to get acquainted and comfortable with one another. The story is about a young raccoon and his mother, and how sometimes it can be hard going off alone. The raccoon initially missed his mother very much, but by the end of the story he realized that even though she cannot be with him all of the time, she will always be with him in his heart. Patrick worked alongside our teachers and fellow students to complete a sequencing craft. He did a great job and seemed to enjoy being around his classmates. He was friendly and open to meeting everyone! I am very excited to be working with Patrick this school year! Best wishes Patrick for a fun-filled first grade year!
Patrick adjusted so beautifully to his first day. What a peaceful, confident, and friendly child. I "interviewed" him, asking him several "get to know you" questions such as, "Do you have any brothers, sisters, pets, etc. What's your favorite subject, food, thing to do, etc." He did a great job of generating ideas and recording his answers. We teamed up with all of the elementary students, and together read, The Kissing Hand. As we read, Patrick made and confirmed predictions. Following the story, we looked at three big ideas, and determined what happened in the beginning, middle, and end. He cut and glue the big ideas in order. Awesome first day!
