Today John Michael and I reviewed his 3 and 4 times tables. When we finished with each, I used that number (3 or 4) as a divisor in long division problems. He has been having trouble mastering all the steps for long division, so as a review from the work we did last week, we practiced the steps using the facts we had studied. Overall, he did well with this academic exercise.

Lesson Comments
John Michael was rude and tired throughout our lesson. Not only did he continuously say "boring" or "i'm tired" under his breath when i was teaching - which i asked him to stop doing, he would sit at stretches and refuse to do the work. He cried at one point because he said he "hated to be wrong". When we were three quarters through the lesson, I offered to leave, and he told me he would behave so I stayed. He doesn't understand long division because it is being taught to him in a group setting so when he misses a step- he is wrong for the rest of the problem. When he gets practice problems to bring home, he does them on a the calculator on his phone. When we worked on it, he didn't want to practice many problems in a row because its boring- or he may be wrong. He doesnt know his addition and subtraction facts, or multiplication and division, and therefore has no confidence when trying to solve. Last, he is trying to hold it together, pretending, all day in school, and he is exhausted at the end of the day for the tutoring session. He was so obnoxious, but I really feel for him. Please tell Jayne the work we did is in his top desk drawer.

Lesson Comments
Today at school, he had one of his 'I can't do this' breakdowns during the writing portion of standardized testing.
He was given a writing prompt "We were eating dinner when we heard a loud noise outside. I looked out the window and saw...". He refused to do it.
The teacher asked for him to do it at home and try to memorize it so he could write it tomorrow. He knew what he wanted to write about and easily told me a very creative story about a dragon that escaped from a video game and how he lured it back through a portal and conquered it and saved the world. Once he started writing, he actually enjoyed it. But he said he hates tests and was afraid to do it at school.
