Getting Information and Cartography
Lesson Outline
Anna and Quinn are a delight to work with! We started the class by reviewing ways in which people get information today and ways in which people got information in the past. This brought us to cartography, and the study of mapmaking. We looked at present day maps and then we looked at ancient maps. Anna and Quinn are very curious and I love that they ask a ton of questions. We then discussed explorers and the discovery of America. We read about Christopher Columbus and Amerigo Vespucci, who helped to map the "New World". At the end of class, Anna and Quinn each drew a map of a town of their creation. Their creativity was wonderful to see and they both acknowledged that the art of cartography is quite challenging! I'm looking forward to teaching both of them.

Anna and Quinn practiced converting 4 digit numbers into standard form, word form and expanded form. We finished our class by reviewing the homework and completing the word problems together. Lesson Comments
We discussed several possibilities for this project and decided that we would like to build an RC vehicle with a nitro (gas) powered engine. We have to find out if we can actually build the engine from scratch or if the kits come with pre-assembled engines. This would be a good project for Quinn to learn the inner workings of a simple combustion engine.
