We started and almost finished Section II today including all tutorials and most of the practice; moving right along! This section covered 'if-then' statements and truth tables including negation, and negating 'some' or 'all' statements.
Yesterday we finished all of the tutorials in the first section of Chapter 1. Today we worked through the practice assignments involving truth tables, conjunctions, disjunctions, and negation.
Today we started the Math Mavericks Modern Mathematics course. We continued our approach of recording all work into his spiral notebook, taking care to head and date each page. We work through each of the tutorials, and then through each of the corresponding practice assignments.
Yesterday we worked on solving one-step equations, and today we went on to solving two-step equations. These are ones which require application of the addition property and the multiplication property. We also took care to practice verifying our solutions, and writing them in set form. In the process of working to sharpen these skills, we developed strategies for conquering challenges, such as using a number line to visualize negation.
Today we expanded on the topics we reviewed yesterday. We worked on solving one step equations using the Addition Property of Equality. I demonstrated several examples, and then gave Michael similar ones to work out on his own. I provided corrections and additional examples to reinforce the skills for which he needed extra practice.
Michael and I continued reviewing basics including simplifying and evaluating expressions using order of operations, distribution, etc. & translating word phrases to math expressions
We spent the first half hour reviewing and the last part of the session taking the final exam. Brandon scored 88/100 and should be in good shape to get the A he wants in the class.
