Pablo and I expanded the topics we covered yesterday and applied them to differentiation today. I showed many examples at the board, including a few proofs, and some on paper for him to review later.
We began with reviewing the tutorial examples we left off with yesterday. Afterward, we started a new tutorial learning about Set Builder notation. As we worked through the examples, we reached a point where it was necessary to have a supplementary review lesson on solving quadratic equations using the Square Root method.
Assignment
Review the practice assignments in Chapter 1, Section 1: Practice 1 and Section 2: Practice 2
Michael and I reviewed some basics such as: simplifying and evaluating expressions using order of operations, distribution, etc. & translating word phrases to math expressions
Pablo and I continued to review and work on differentiation and optimization word problems involving use of the chain rule, the product rule, and the quotient rule in preparation for his test.
We reviewed differentiation and optimization word problems involving use of the chain rule, the product rule, especially those involving maximization of revenue or minimization of cost.
First, we reviewed Pablo's missed test questions from his Tuesday class meeting, then we went over his new lecture notes for clarification and practice. The topics included taking derivatives of exponential functions, and related business applications.
Pablo and I reviewed understanding the inverse relationship between exponential and logarithmic functions, as well as properties of logarithms for condensing and expanding expressions.
Michael and I started Chapter 2 today! We learned the definitions of the different sets of real numbers, and focused on understanding how to classify numbers according to those definitions. Special attention was given to understanding rational numbers vs. irrational numbers, as well as what makes a number non-real.
We finished up the topics in Chapter 1 today after covering DeMorgan's Laws for negating conjunctions and disjunctions. We then began reviewing the entire chapter by working through the Chapter Test.
