Function operations
Lesson Outline
Ben finally got through the Functions Operations test! I'm so happy for him. He appeared to be very relieved, too. I think he has now understood what he needs to do if he has to interrupt a test (e.g. if class comes to an end), so hopefully he won't get any further automatic gradings of his tests. We had the time to nevertheless review some of the principles involved, so he should finally be able to fully close the chapter on Function Operations. In the remaining time, we proceeded to the next chapter, and reviewed some of the problems and principles in the chapter pre-test. I can see that Ben is very eager to proceed now at full steam, now that this little series of glitches is finally overcome.

Finally! Ben was able to complete the test and therefore the chapter that has been dogging him for quite a while now. We started the next chapter, and I think Ben is definitely ready to charge ahead to make up for these past weeks. And I look forward to working with him on the upcoming topics.

Ben still had some glitches he hadn't been able to sort out - but I understand the problems he had this time even the teacher wasn't able to fix until Ben ran through the whole lesson again. However, we spent the time going over some principles in function operations (addition and subtraction versus multiplication and division) - Ben has sometimes been a bit insecure with these, but I feel that after the class his grasp of these principles was much more solid. (I apologize for the tardiness of this session summary, I was quite convinced I had submitted it... but thankfully Elise reminded that I had not.)

Lesson Comments
Poor Ben! He continues having glitches, and was a bit frustrated last lesson ... Apparently, he had to re-do the whole lesson before even the teacher could allow him to move forward. We have agreed now that Ben will not attempt a test and leave it half completed, if he's a bit unsure of the subject. He must sit the tests in one go - we think that's what's been kicking him out of the system, and automatically assigning incorrect answers to unfinished problems.

Function operations (cont'd)
Lesson Outline
I could tell that Ben was quite distressed with the fact that he wasn't able to access his math work over Spring Break - he informed me that the system works so that the teacher has to be online at the same time, and obviously the teacher must have been away last week. I could tell he had really wanted to progress with his work during the break. Nevertheless, we continued with Function operations - there was yet again a small glitch with the online material, so he couldn't re-take the test, nor could we move forward with material. So instead I had Ben review the subject (since it had been a while since he had looked at it) by giving him various problems to solve, and we talked through some basic algebraic concepts to make sure that he fully understands them. I hope the rest of the week went well for him, and that he can sort these various glitches out with his teacher.

I look forward to moving onto the next few chapters with Ben ... he's had quite a few glitches recently, I hope he manages to sort them out. But it sounds as if his teacher is very sympathetic and understanding, and I'm sure we can move forward soon.

Lesson Outline
Ben had already started the test on Function operations at school, and so we worked through the rest of the test together. I've said this before, but I do feel that Ben is very comfortable with this way of learning math - he appears to have a much stronger command over the basic principles than before. He worked very hard and did very well on the problems that we worked on in our class, but there is still a glitch with the online test ... apparently, it completely disregarded the four questions he had completed earlier. Ben said he was going to talk to his teacher at school about how the system actually works - it could be that the tests need to be completed in one single sitting. Nevertheless, even if we looked at the test problems together, Ben did all the work!

Ben is so much more at ease learning math with this online system - it's so nice to see him so relaxed.

Relations and Functions
Lesson Outline
I was so happy to hear that Ben continues to do very well in his Unit quizzes/tests! Today we started on Chapter 2, and finished watching the last few online lessons together - Ben always asked questions if he was unsure of something. He then completed the practice questions on Relations and Functions, and it was quite evident that Ben is really beginning to grasp the different concepts dealt with. A good lesson!

Ben is really demonstrating a level of comfort with math that he did not have last semester. I'm happy to see that this online method of learning suits him very well. He continues to score highly on the quizzes and tests.

Test review - Unit 1: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities
Lesson Outline
Ben wanted to review the topics dealt with in Unit 1 by working on the problems in the Practice Test for the unit. Ben had already completed about half of the problems, and so we worked on the remaining ones. We also looked at the problems he had worked on on his own. I was very impressed with the manner in which Ben tackled the problems - he has a very methodical approach to solving them, which is the only way to do math. He has really learned how to work at them doing one step at a time. A good class for Ben!

Ben is really developing his math skills - this system of learning (the online class) appears to suit him very well.

Absolute value equations
Lesson Outline
I was so happy to hear that Ben had passed the quiz last week! And that he did so well on the pre-test for the following chapter, enabling him to jump forward in his studies. Today we concentrated on Absolute Value Equations, and Ben did very well. We worked through the problems in the Practice section, and then I gave Ben a few extra problems to do on the board. I think he really got the gist of the topic, and I look forward to hearing how he does on the Quiz.

I do believe that this method of learning math suits Ben very well. After a bit of instruction and nudging in the right direction this afternoon, he worked through the problems - both online and those I assigned him - with ease. This is a marked difference from last fall.

Inequalities
Lesson Outline
When Ben arrived for class, he told me that there again was a problem with the online quiz (it doesn't appear to be a very stable system!) - Instead we reviewed as many problems as we could associated with the subject of the quiz, so as to prepare Ben as much as possible for when he tackles the actual quiz in class. Ben worked very hard and very well! I only needed to nudge him in the right direction a couple of times. In the remaining minutes, we looked at upcoming topics, and preliminarily agreed that Ben would watch the online lecture and other material at school, and then he and I can go over the pre-test together, and he can tell me if there are any areas in which he feels insecure - if there are, we can work through extra problems together, so he really understands the subject matter. But I repeat: Ben really worked very well today, and appears to have a thorough understanding of how to tackle the inequalities problems.

Linear equations
Lesson Outline
We continued exploring Ben's new online system - Primarily, we covered the questions that he had difficulties with when he attempted the quiz on Linear Equations. Then as we started to look at the quiz he was in the middle of, we encountered a problem - I'm hoping Ben can solve this with his teacher on Tuesday morning.

As per my email, we encountered a technical difficulty with the online system AND I got confused with the times, and so finished class 15 minutes early... but we shall make this up tomorrow, Wednesday. I'm also hoping we shall get to grips with how the online system works - I think the primary difficulties arise when Ben is taking a quiz (there are restrictions on the number of times a student can take a quiz), for last time we were able to navigate through the lesson with no major hiccups.

Ben explained to me how the E2020 system works. I'm very happy to hear that he is working on his math in this way! We looked at the last quiz he took, and worked through the questions he was unsure on. Ben appears to be a lot happier working in this way, and we'll continue working after school either by going over places in which he is uncertain, or continuing with the current lesson.

It was lovely to see Ben again! He was late because of the bridge! and there was a lot of traffic. He appears to be so much happier working on his math in this manner, as compared to before the holidays.
