Southwest Asia: Physical geography, early civilization
Lesson Outline
We covered the fertile crescent and the agricultural revolution, the development of the Islam, Christianity, and Judaism, and the rise of the Ottoman empire. Then we reviewed the political, social, economic, and environmental changes in this area after World War I. Next we concentrated on the history of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. At the end of our session, Dylan summarized what we had covered today.
We reviewed the first week of the summer study program that I created to prepare Cal for the Human Geography class at Dreyfus in the fall.

Cal did his usual bathroom break to begin the session, lasting 15 minutes. Very frustrating. Moreover, he did nothing of what was recommended for study last week.

Cal had not even glanced at the geography doc I created for him and emailed to his mother the week before. So, it was almost like starting from the beginning.
We did a broad overview of the world in terms of its major geographical features. We utilized a doc that I had prepared for this purpose.

Cal has no foundational knowledge of geography. He doesn't even know where all the oceans are or how they rank in size. Moreover, he was not familiar with all the continents. So, our work is cut out!

As mentioned yesterday, Cal has absolutely no clue with regard to where nations are or even US states and major cities. So, he has his work cut out! I spoke with Evelyn and she is getting him some interactive software packages as an instructional aid.
Abbey and I watched a documentary on Ethnicity. We discussed some of the major themes in the film and wrote about the possible outcomes of the claims made .
I had a lesson planned for Abbey to continue researching ethnic religions and the distribution and impact of world religions, but she was absent today.
Abbey and I finished watching the film Skin. We discussed the content and have started a brainstorming session for her paper. We will be working on the paper in the nexr few sessions.
