Abbey and I went through the chapter 5 outline on language. We discussed the origin of language and how it gets disseminated. We also watched a documentary on the History of the English Language.
We will continue watching the documentary tomorrow.
Abbey began studying world religions. We started by activating her prior knowledge and brainstormed what she already knew. We then brainstormed the "So What?", where she discovered reasons why studying world religions is an important thing to do, i.e. cultural competence, basis for legal practices, perceptions, morals/value systems, wars, etc. Abbey initiated an excellent conversation about her beliefs and questions regarding God and religious beliefs. In effort to help her gain a better understanding of the geography, origin, and distribution of world religions, we looked at the wall sized map in the dojo. She created a graphic organizer outlining the 5 major world religions, and we discussed how two religions begot two others. This information serves as a foundation for the sects we will talk about in the upcoming session. For each major world religion we discussed the population of believers, terminology such as monotheistic, and how religion influences laws, actions, and human rights.
As stipulated by her teacher, Abbey was required to read through Chapter 4 of her textbook and track down all of the new vocabulary words. Because Abbey worked diligently through her English class, I provided a deviation from Ch. 4 reading that tied the concepts culture, population, and geography together in a fun video activity. For this lesson, Abbey was able to select any video she wanted to watch, as long as she could explain its culture, population, and geography. Abbey and I had a pretty good time watching videos where these elements were not as clearly stated, and Abbey did a very impressive job of piecing all of the concepts together. Afterwards, we continued reading Ch. 4 and wrote down new vocabulary words.
Abbey and I finished up all of the vocabulary for chapter 5" language". We wrote down the definitions and discussed them in context. We will be reading the chapter in the next few days.
Abbey and I found the key terms for chapter 5, wrote the definition down and discussed them. She will be finishing up the rest of the terms and we will begin our reading of chapter 5 in the next few days.
Abbey and I finished the power point for chapter 4. We discussed folk and pop culture, its origins and its dissemination. We also discussed the culture of songs, art and sports. We just began Chapter 5 on language, the origin of language , specifically English( thus far) how it originated and how it disseminated.
Human Geography
Abbey and I read through chapter 4 of the human geography book together, stopping to clear up unknown concepts and discuss. We recorded vocabulary words and readable definitions in Cornell Notes format and discussed study skills and habits. We are currently half way through reading the first case study.
Abbey and I spent time getting to know each other during this, our first session. We completed a Venn diagram about ourselves, discovering many similarities between us. We then reviewed what she already knows about Human Geography, and we discussed elements of interest to her.
