Trevor took his oral test and written test for chapter 5. He did a number of the writing assignments and oral assignments for chapter 6. He is moving through the chapters well.
How to identify and build an excellent thesis statements
Lesson Outline
-- Review sample thesis staments, which range from 'poor' to 'good' to 'better' (samples provided by the college board)
-- After components of a 'better' thesis statement have been identified, guide student to create a thesis statement for his research paper
-- Review / comment student's research papaer, and have student make needed changes to draft 4 of research paper; this includes addition of thesis statement.

Obtain addresses of Governor of Florida and Admissions Counselor at FSU (in preparation for letter-writing project)

Good session. Trevor was a little out of it but otherwise okay. At the end of class he asked if he good to his car between classes. I agreed but reminded him to be on time to his next class. Obviously he did more than go to his car and was very late to his next class.
How to conduct reseach and write a research paper (continuation from previous session)
Lesson Outline
-- Have student perform a guided reading of critical introduction to Miller's play, "The Crucible," making student write notations of possible use to his own research
-- Have a brief discussion about the content of the critical essay (no more than five minutes)
-- Review sample reseach paper #1, with exclusive emphasis on parenthetical references
-- Make necessary changes to draft #4 of student's research paper (an ongoing project)

Read sample research paper and critique (identify errors) as needed
Trevor is currently studying for his segment 1 exam.
Trevor will be able to solve systems of equations, including systems of 3 equations and nonlinear systems.

After working with Trevor today, I see that we will need at least one more session to study before Trevor takes the exam. He should take the exam in the next few weeks. After that, we will begin working on segment 2.

-- Revise draft 2 of reseach paper
-- Have student make recommended changes to draft 2 of research paper
-- Practice use of parenthetical citations by giving student a sample research paper (4 pages) and asking him (student) to identify probable type of sources being cited
Trevor and I worked on the food/ restaurant section of the class today. He has not taken any of the chapter tests but we have done most of the work in the chapters. If he finishes soon he can start Spanish 2 without problems.
