Another frustrating day. Cal spent 20 minutes (don't believe it!) and made about 5% of the required corrections. I'm trying to "refresh" his memory with regard to grammar and punctuation since he has retained relatively little since leaving for Canada three weeks ago.
We reviewed Cal's essay line by line and did a quick review of many of the grammar rules we worked on from the beginning of class.

Lesson Comments
Very frustrating day. Cal spent just 20 minutes on his assigned essay and it was extremely poor. Also, Cal has done no follow-up on any of the work that we previously had undertaken, so it was nearly like starting from scratch.
We discussed subtraction as the equivalent of adding an opposite using the number line, We discussed the formal definition of absolute value and then worked several problems from the text.

We watched a 12-minute video illustrating a number of ideas designed to help one write a powerful introduction. We then reviewed his revised essay in detail.

Cal struggled in terms o paying attention today. He seemed particularly depressed today. I believe that we ended on a good note discussing the video.
We worked multiplication problems of increasing difficulty, including decimals, fractions positive and negative numbers. We finished with a wind-chill word problem.

Lesson Comments
Cal worked hard and well. His multiplication skills are excellent, except when it comes to fractions. He picked up quickly on the process. I plan on exploring going on-line with him for some practice as well as a change of pace.
Because Cal failed to rewrite his essay from the week before, we could not review the changes as planned. So, we went in a different direction, studying common word usage mistakes: that/which, farther/further, effect/affect, etc.
Assignment

Cal showed up 12 minutes late and immediately took an 18-minute bathroom break. So, we were down to 30 minutes right out of the shoot, As mentioned before, Cal did not do any homework from the previous week, which was distressing.
We reviewed real number (+ and -) addition and then went 9n to matrices and matrix addition and subtraction. We worked several problems from the textbook. We also introduced the graphing calculator as a tool for matrix addition and subtraction.
We studied several literary elements:
• Allegory
• Allusion
• Anecdote
• Metaphor
• Irony
• Imagery
• Hyperbole

Lesson Comments
Cal sure isn't easy, but I got him to loosen up a bit today for the first time. BTW...I'm truly astounded at how firm an understanding Cal has of basic writing skills, punctuation and grammar. Once again, it's simply a question of motivation.
We reviewed the hierarchy of number sets (natural, whole, etc.), worked several problems identifying which set(s) a given number was an element of. Then we worked through an explanation of absolute value and worked several problems featuring that.
