We took a set of data from the text (Percentages of households where languages other than English are spoken, by state in the Northeast) and organized it in a stem-and-leaf plots, computed the mean and the range and determined the median and the mode(s).

We worked our way through the Chapter Two Test in the text book, concentrating on solving various equations. We also worked our way through several word problems from the test in which we needed to develop our own equations.

Cal worked very hard this session. He solved the problems at the white board with minimal coaching from me. We covered quite a bit of material and Cal's grasp of the material is excellent.
Cal and I discussed the goals of photographers and other artists, including the attempt to show others what is often hidden or not otherwise easily seen. We also discussed sentence structure and incomplete sentences.

Find items in workbook he does not already know, and begin to write an essay on one of his photographs

Cal did the lion's share of the work at the white board while I coached from the sideline. He grasped the material well. We'll return to the XY plane tomorrow.
Cal and I reviewed what he already knew about essay writing, and then we used Keat's poem about a Grecian Urn to learn about getting beyond the surface images of photography, film, or any other art form.

I think Cal began to understand how all art has a deeper meaning behind the superficial image. This kind of understanding is unusual for most people, let alone someone as young as Cal.
We worked problems from the text in which we simplified algebraic expressions using the rules for order of operations. Cal did most of the work with some coaching from me when necessary.
