Cal and I discussed the different elements of a story that are also found in film. We focused on dialect that was not written about in America until Mark Twain in the mid-1800s. We also discussed the relationship of photography with videography.

Although Cal does not like to write, he is accepting his writing assignments with good grace.
We continued working through the Chapter One Test in the text, completing several problems, including matrix addition problems, both manually and on the TI-83 graphing calculator.

Cal worked hard. His previous knowledge of the material is somewhat sporadic, but when the material is explained to him, he picks it up quickly.
Cal and I got to know about each other's interest and background in filmmaking. We discussed various elements of filmmaking, including the framing of photography to emphasize mood.

Cal is very bright and facile with the computer, and is very interested in films. I think we'll have a good time learning together.
We spent the session working on the test after Chapter 1 in the text. The problems involved examining short tables of data, assigning variables, and deterring a relationship between the two variables.

Cal caught right on. I think the practice problems were productive.
We went through a comparison of 1958 vs 2015 prices (based on the tutor's recollection of 1958.) We listed today's prices for the same items. We calculated that prices had increased over 1000% while the minimum wage had improved by 650%. Hence a bag of groceries costing $10 in 1958 would chew up 25% of the 1950's guy's paycheck whilst in 2015, the same bag of groceries (over $100) would eat up 42% of the modern guy's weekly paycheck. That would suggest that an increase in the minimum wage would be in order.

Cal seemed to be quite interested in this "experiment." It included algebra skills practice (calculating increases and percentage increases and arithmetic mean (average).)
We discussed FLVS Algebra 1 in general and what our approach should be. I think, were I taking the course, I'd want to finish it as quickly as possible and expressed that view to Cal.

I suggested that Cal discuss with his parents the issue of his access to a computer at home for use with FLVS. I think he's capable of getting through most of FLVS Algebra 1 on his own with me being available to help him over rough spots during tutoring sessions.
We started by writing the slope-intercept on the board and explaining it. We then went to some examples in which we used the information to graph the equations by hand. We then switched over to using the graphing calculator. We finished by working on finding the solutions to equations that contained addition and multiplication operations.
