Jackson spent half of the session finishing his take-home exam. During the second half, we reviewed topics from chapters that were covered earlier in the school year in preparation for Part 2 of his take-home final exam.
diagnosis and treatment-difference in radioactivity
production of nuclides- reactor and cyclotron

Jackson had a scheduled flvs phone appointment at 12.00.
We discussed the theory between PET scanning- conversion of emitted gamma rays into photon and then into electrical signals and finally into a computerized image. What can be detected
Discussed cell repair for damaged DNA in slow dividing cells and compared to cell auto distraction in rapid dividing cells-this is the reasoning behind the use in cancer, but also why in normally rapid dividing cells, like hair and intestine self destruction will occur rather than repair.
Today I returned Jackson's graded Chapter 19 quiz (30/30) and went over it with him. Thereafter, we discussed the final exam to be administered on 4/30 and reviewed the course material in preparation for same. Discussion was excellent.

Had a discussion regarding the use of radionuclides in diagnosis of disease. The diagnosis due to cellular or tissue physiology, brought about by radionuclides, in contrast to diagnosis by cellular or tissue change was stressed. Tissue change or cellular change is the traditional, non-nuclear method of diagnosis and will occur only when there is damage to the tissue.
Jackson continued writing his rough draft for his final paper. He is working on attaining 8-10 literary quotes from the text " Hiroshima". He is also working on attaining quotes from a secondary source.
view and discuss video which shows and explains fission, the production of energy from fission. Fusion and how it produces energy. How fission and fusion are tied together in nuclear devices. The end products of both fission and fusion and the destructive power of nuclear energy release.

video was very informative and interesting. Jackson commented that it covered much of what we did in class, and that he did not feel inadequate or
intimidated by what was presented, even though it was a Harvard Prof. giving the lecture. We will do some work next week on the medicinal uses of nuclear isotopes to finish up the course.
