Game Strategy, Reading Comprehension - Predicting Outcomes
Lesson Outline
Gwendolyn began her session learning how to play Crazy 8's. She quickly picked up the game, employed some strategy of her own and had an amazing time playing. Gwendolyn had such a great time that she laughed non-stop and wanted to play the game four consecutive times. After playing Crazy 8's, we played a reading comprehension game called Predicting Outcomes: Western Frontier. Players of the game take to the trails and must be ready to predict what might happen by reading passages and making predictions. Gwendolyn did a fantastic time reading the comprehension passages, applying her background knowledge to different situations, searching for context clues and predicting the correct outcomes.

Vocabulary, Word Building, Phonics
Lesson Outline
Today Gwendolyn played a new academic game called, Bananagrams. The game uses elements of both Boggle and Scrabble - it is similar to Boggle in the sense that game play is simultaneous, yet players build interlocking puzzles similar to those in Scrabble. Because Bananagrams can be played by players at any reading level, the game is useful for students who are learning to spell and phonics rules. While playing, Gwendolyn learned many different phonics rules that helped her to successfully build words. Bananagrams is a game that stimulates creativity because the goal is to play all of one's tiles, which generates a need to configure and reconfigure one's word grid to accept all of the letters. Gwendolyn did this many times during the game and was quite excited at her ability to break apart words and use the letters to build better words elsewhere. At the end of the session, Gwendolyn shared that she liked the game so much that she wants to play again next week.
