This was Episode 1 of 10 in this classic series. We were able to watch a web version, showing how the trigger effect of a power outage in the northeast could have altered the lives of millions of people. Something similar happened 12,000 years ago when rain stopped falling in five regions of the world triggering migration, development of mathematics, irrigation, centralized government and engineering.

Lesson Comments
I think Jess' head started hurting from all the information. I try to stress the complexities of the process as we discuss the anatomy and physiology. We discused some about amniocentisis and fetal alcohol syndrom as part of the embryological process.
Discussion Questions: Characterize the men in the story vs. the women. Do the men have more depth here? Why does Walker omit the names of most of the men in this story? What is Celie's sexual orientation? Is this a result of trauma? Describe the relationship between Mr. and Celie. What is their marriage like?
Begin working on Jess's own historical narrative. Project will include her biography, connections to family and places, and her and her family's overall place in greater history.

Jess likes the idea of doing her own narrative for the rest of the year. This is an important skill that is really left out of the "AP" curriculum. It should be a constructive and fun way to finish the year.
