Jessica's close-reading skills were put to the test today, but she did a good job of finding meaning in the minute details of our text.
Jessica will be able to 1) perform a significance test for the difference between two means; 2) find a confidence interval for the difference between two means.
1) Oral Quiz: Describe the major events of Part 1 of the novel.
2) Discuss the characters of the novel, and where they fit into male/female dichotomies. Are there any androgynous characters here? Describe the life of a pioneer in Cather's novel. How does this differ from the portrayal of these individuals in Walt Whitman's poem "O Pioneers?"
3) Have Jessica characterize the land, and find moments in the text where the land is personified. How can land be "wild" or "untamable?"

Jessica was an avid listener and participator today.
1) Research Prompt: Jessica uses reputable sources (i.e. biography.com, The Norton Critical Edition of O Pioneers!, and/or Google Scholar) to research the life and works of Willa Cather, whose book we are beginning today. After compiling the necessary information, Jessica turns her research findings into a brief, 5-6 slide powerpoint presentation with images and visual aids. 2) Jessica and I discuss the results of her research findings, and I expand upon points that she may have missed, or on some more important events in Cather's life. 3)Begin Chapter 1 of O Pioneers!
