Lesson Outline
1) Jessica discusses the fate of Tess, Angel, and Alec in her oral quiz on Tess of the D'Urbervilles. Afterwards, she and I provide a list of moments in the text which foreshadowed these events, and whether or not these outcomes are consistent with each character's personality and development. in addition, Jessica is asked to construct Tess as an Archetype: what social, gendered/political group does Tess represent? How does Hardy use Tess to expose hypocrisy?
2)Jessica and I finish the 2008 BBC Version of Tess.
3)Jessica and I work on her FAU Honors essay.

Jessica was thoroughly surprised at the conclusion of our class text, and we had a very lively discussion about how Tess's death makes a comment upon Victorian society that demonstrated to me that Jessica had truly understood the deeper meaning of the text.

1) Research Prompt: Jessica uses reputable sources (i.e. biography.com, The Norton Critical Edition of O Pioneers!, and/or Google Scholar) to research the life and works of Willa Cather, whose book we are beginning today. After compiling the necessary information, Jessica turns her research findings into a brief, 5-6 slide powerpoint presentation with images and visual aids.
2) Jessica and I discuss the results of her research findings, and I expand upon points that she may have missed, or on some more important events in Cather's life.
3)Begin Chapter 1 of O Pioneers!
