Today, we completed the Statue of Liberty penny experiment. The observations of the pennies during each stage of the experiment were described and colored to match on the recording sheet. Then, we worked on a U.S. coin booklet. The details of each coin were described, the presidents were named, and the coin values were written in two ways. These activities were stapled into the Social Studies journal, and we finished with a money melody.
This morning, Libby and I applied addition concepts using a bar model to show and solve problems. Libby listened to addition word problems, circled the needed information, determined the question that needed to be answered, filled in a bar model, wrote number sentences, and solved problems. She was encouraged to listen carefully and use counting cubes or quick pictures for help.
This morning, Teddy completed a fast facts check on adding 2. Then, we worked on using tools to find missing addends using a part-part-whole bar model with sums to 20. Teddy practiced finding the missing addend of problems using the number line, counting cubes, and quick pictures. Together, we created stories to match the given problems.

During today's Math ACT practice test questions, Ben was receptive to trying these useful exercises. We covered important/common problems such as functions, inequalities, and word problems and Ben became a bit tired after nearly 20 minutes of practicing. He will need additional stamina/endurance to achieve the high ACT Math score he is capable of.
Review terms involved in blood transfusions. Determine that the blood type is due to specific antigens located on the red blood cells, and that the antibodies are found within the plasma. From a chart, indicate the % of blood types found in the population. Discuss the antigen Rh factor which is a second blood typing antigen, and note the type as either Rh positive or Rh negative. Show genotype by using capital I and lower case I along with the antigen as a superscript. Example, type A allele would be I^a. State that type A and type B are co-dominant, and type O is recessive. Have Cam write the genotypes for each type, both homozygous and heterozygous.
Discuss and define active transport occurring within cells. Determine that substances must sometimes move into and out of cells against the concentration gradient, which would involve active transport. Relate that active transport requires energy supplied by ATP. Discuss how movement of small molecules through active transport involves transport proteins, also called transport pumps. Show diagrams to demonstrate the placement of these pumps. Introduce endocytosis and exocytosis as active transport methods to move large molecules into a cell. Use diagram images which show endocytosis and exocytosis and the formation of vesicles which occur.
Cam is painting on paper until his canvas roll arrives. Using two sheets of 18" x 24" drawing paper, Cam chose an analogous color scheme of greens and then added pops of orange for contrast. He mixed complementary colors orange and blue to create a neutral that worked well in his compositions. He wants to continue to explore his abstract expressionist painting. He is doing very well in this direction, and I support his artistic endeavors! Bravo, Cam!
