As JP continues to have concerns about how to craft the argumentative essay, I today reviewed the elements and techniques used in the argumentative essay. I additionally discussed the practice prompt and provided model sentences and a model thesis to use in an introduction. After we read through a number of AP argumentative essay prompts, JP chose a topic he felt he could address, and I again provided suggestions, models, and ideas to incorporate in the introduction and the body of the essay. For homework- draft the argumentative essay from the chosen prompt per class discussion.

On the board I reviewed all of the techniques and elements to include in the argumentative essay. We then reviewed and discussed an AP practice argumentative essay prompt . We examined how to form a thesis that does not merely reiterate the prompt and what type of evidence would be persuasive given the prompt. Matthew then began drafting his argumentative essay which he will complete for homework tonight.

As Unit 7 addresses punctation usage, during today's session we reviewed and discussed two punctuation exercises Matthew completed for homework. I provided instruction on the proper use of the semicolon, the colon, commas ,and the apostrophe. We further addressed why certain multiple choice answers are not correct because they create run-ons or fragments . Last, I explained how a dash can be effectively used in the place of a comma in certain circumstances.

During the first segment of the session, JP completed an AP review exercise on Unit 7. I provided assistance where JP raised questions. I then distributed a practice argumentative essay prompt . After we discussed the thesis of the prompt, I provided suggestions on how to draft a brief outline before writing. Once JP decided on the position he wished to argue, we reviewed how to formulate an essay thesis that does more than restate the prompt. I further reviewed how JP could add structure to his essay by defining certain terms from the prompt that are subject to interpretation , such as respect or how one can convey respect. JP will write the essay for homework due on Monday.

As part of AP's Unit 7, we today studied the use of punctuation both grammatically and to impart meaning. I provided instruction on proper usage of the comma, the dash, the semicolon, the colon, and quotation marks. Next, I addressed how punctuation can be used to add meaning, emphasis or pauses to slow down the reader . We then reviewed Matthew's AP homework exercises on this topic and addressed areas where he encountered difficulties ,such as the proper use of subordinate conjunctions to explain contrasting ideas.
