Brandon is concerned about his grade in this class, but was unable to find it from the Palm Beach State on-line grade book. He is considering withdrawing from the course, depending on his grade. I've noticed that his algebra skills are a bit on the thin side and that may be a contributing factor.
We worked on a three-part project. Part 3 was an analysis of the graphs of a function compared to the graph of its first derivative; Part 2 was an analysis of the performance of a quarter horse over a 440-yd race (times vs. Yards covered) and Part 1 involved the costs of manufacturing shirts as the number of shirts made increased

Brandon seemed to "get" the material fairly well, but I'm not sure that, if I turned the reins of the problem totally over to him, how far the horse would run.
We went through several example problems in which we used the first derivative to find maximum revenue and minimum cost. In most cases, the graphs of the applicable functions were given; in others the graphs were not shown and the second derivative was evaluated to check concavity and determine whether the point was a maximum or a minimum.

Brandon played an active part in our discussion and left with a better understanding than when he arrived.
We reviewed finding some simple derivatives and stressed the necessity for memorizing the formulas. Then we discussed the derivative's role in finding a function's critical numbers. Finally, we worked several problems from the text.

Brandon's confidence seems to be improving and I believe the tutoring sessions are helping with that.
