Arianna began with mixed addition and subtraction facts mental minutes as well as a multiplication minute. She also took quick quizzes on comparing capacity and reading numbers as words. Then, Arianna completed fraction lessons on Mathseeds in which she matched fractions to their models and added fractions with common denominators before simplifying. We finished with Khan Academy course challenge questions on adding angles, angle names, the written form of decimal numbers, prime and composite numbers, and rounding to the nearest 100.
Today we started to discuss ancient species with a short video about the different species of sloths that have been found in the fossil record: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt9tBtQoAHo. Arianna was amazed that they have found so much information from fossils.
Ariana and I read two scholastic articles that she chose. One was on dominoes and one was on the power of eyes. We read and discussed the articles. We talked about the main idea of each article. Ariana reads aloud well and comprehends what she read well, also.
This morning, Arianna completed a mental math minute on subtraction facts and quick quizzes on finding the rule of patterns and grids. Then, she worked on course challenge review questions on naming decimals, multiplying multi-digit numbers by 10, changing improper fractions to mixed numbers, and naming triangles. We spent the remainder of time solving 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problems.
We continued to learn about early human civilizations through the PBS Eons video channel. Today we watched and discussed a short video about fossil evidence of humans being prey to large carnivorous animals: https://youtu.be/G_hl804lSfc?list=PLi6K9w_UbfFSxHPEDWcXxIxSA6gDR4OeZ. Arianna asked to learn about prehistoric species of animals, so we will move into that topic next session.
Arianna continued working on her WebQuest about Lewis and Clark and this expedition west. Throughout her quest she will learn and document information about the expedition. She added pages to her Google Slide journal that included her encounters with the Native Americans and she began to research and add animals and plant life she would have seen on her journey.
Arianna began with course challenge questions on comparing fractions with unlike denominators, comparing decimal amounts in different forms, and finding mistakes within multiplication problems when using the break apart method. Then, a mental math minute was completed on subtraction facts and and a quick quiz on matching equations to arrays. We finished with money related word problems.
Arianna practiced drawing conclusions and answering literal/inferential questions in a lesson on ReadingEggspress. She reviewed by sharing her graphic organizer for "City of Ember" and we read the next two chapters. This story has many connections to the short story we read on Reading Eggspress and Arianna was quick to point them out. Her previous prediction that the mayor is trying to hide something from the people was proven true today. We practiced vocabulary in the context of the story.
